It is composed of bony vertebrae as well as ligaments (which provide stability). Because the neck moves so much and supports the weight of the head, it is easy to injure it or feel the long term effects of wear and tear. Neck pain may stem from soft tissue abnormalities as well as from problems with the bones or joints of the spine. Some people may experience pain in the upper back and shoulders from a problem in the neck.
