Erik Hasenboehler, M.D.

Dr. Erik Hasenboehler is a Board-Certified Fellowship-trained Orthopedic Trauma surgeon with special training in both Orthopedic Trauma surgery and Acute Care Critical Care.

Dr. Hasenboehler primarily supports our collaborative relationship with Penn State Health, providing Orthopedic Trauma care to patients at Holy Spirit Medical Center. 

He earned his medical degree from the University of Bern Faculty of Medicine, in Bern, Switzerland. Following graduation, he completed his Surgery and Trauma Surgery residency following the original AO-Trauma training (www.aotrauma.aofoundation.org) in Switzerland at the Ospedale Civico, in Lugano, Kantonsspital Luzern, in Lucerne and Spital Oberengadin in Samedan. He holds Dual Board-Certification in Switzerland.

After his residency Dr. Hasenboehler pursued additional fellowship training in Orthopedic Trauma at the University of Colorado Denver Health Medical Center and Panorama Orthopaedics St. Anthony’s Central Hospital in Denver, and Acute Care and Critical Care Surgery at the University of Kentucky in Lexington. 

Before joining OIP, Dr. Hasenboehler served as an Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore for almost 10 years. During his time at Hopkins he was the leading Orthopaedic Trauma Surgeon at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center (Level 2 Trauma Center), where he established the current Orthopaedic Trauma Service, and also served as the Medical Director of the Musculoskeletal Clinic at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. He was nominated Top Doctor in Baltimore for Orthopaedic Trauma in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2020.

In addition to his extensive surgical experience, Dr. Hasenboehler has devoted substantial time to teaching and training of the next generations of Orthopaedic surgeons nationally and internationally. In recognition of his teaching he received the “Johns Hopkins Orthopaedic Department Best Teacher Award of the Year” in 2018 and 2019, and in 2018 also the Award for “Most Influential Attending of the Johns Hopkins Orthopaedic Surgery Department”. He has published extensively including a book on Post-Traumatic Arthritis. Dr. Hasenboehler serves as Faculty at the AO North America (www.aona.org) and is part of the EAST Practice Guidelines Committee (www.east.org). He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeon and is a member of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery.
